Hillsborough County NH

Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, is one of ten counties in the Granite State.  Located in the southern central part of the state, Hillsborough County is home to thirty-one towns and cities, including the state’s two largest cities, Manchester and Nashua.  The county holds almost 400,000 residents making it the most populous county in the state, just ahead of the seacoast area’s Rockingham County.  Hillsborough County is fast becoming the most developed county in New Hampshire, which, of course, lends to the state’s population doubling over the past forty-five years.  New Hampshire is a popular state for homebuyers and Hillsborough County is prepared to accept any and all newcomers.

Hillsborough County is not all just about large populations; it is home to several very small, classic New England-style towns and villages that are sure to whisk you back to a simpler place and time.  A fine example of this is the tiny hamlet of Sharon, with less than 400 residents or Windsor, with less than 250.  For a slightly larger Hillsborough County town, you may consider a town like Greenfield, with around 1700 people, or maybe the larger Litchfield, with its population nearly breaking 8000.  Whatever the size community you’re searching for, you’re sure to find it here in Hillsborough County.

Hillsborough County was one of the original five counties created in New Hampshire back in 1769.  The reason for the counties’ creation was that the seat of the NH governments, being located in Portsmouth on the seacoast, made it difficult to dispense justice and simply govern in general.  This problem led to the Provincial Act of 1769 which broke up the state into five easily-managed pieces, each with their own county seat.  Amherst was originally chosen as Hillsborough County’s seat because it was the largest farming community in the county, but today the Hillsborough County seats are Manchester and Nashua.

Many of the state’s towns along the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border are bedroom communities – home to commuters who work out of state.  But this doesn’t mean that Hillsborough County is a sleepy place – far from it.  Many residents enjoy taking advantage of the stunning natural surroundings of southern NH in the way of kayaking, hunting, swimming, snow-shoeing, camping, biking, horseback riding, sailing, fishing, mountain climbing, golfing, skiing, four-wheeling, trail riding on ATVs, motorcycles and snowmobiles, or just driving around taking in the breathtaking scenery that New Hampshire has in spades.  An embarrassment of riches, the New Hampshire countryside offers enough things to see and do to keep even the most jaded traveler entertained.
