Goffstown, New Hampshire
A bustling municipality of about 18,000 people, Goffstown, New Hampshire offers its residents everything from an indoor swimming facility to museums to skiing. Situated on Glen Lake in northeastern Hillsborough County, Goffstown provides many outdoor activities including fishing, biking, boating and camping in the summer with skating, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing available in the winter. First granted as "Narragansett Number Four" in 1734, the town was intended for soldiers who fought in the 1675 Narragansett War, also called "King Philip's War". The small community was referred to as "Piscataquog Village" and (for some reason) "Shovestown" until the township was regranted to new settlers by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1748. One of the settlers was Colonel John Goffe, for whom the governor had named the town. Goffstown incorporated in 1761. Power from the Piscataquog River allowed Goffstown to become an influential mill town supplying lumber, cotton and textiles to many New England towns and beyond.
Goffstown in divided in the center of town by the Piscataquog River, which feeds from Glen Lake. The Piscataquog provides excellent fishing, canoeing and kayaking, as does Glen Lake itself. Goffstown is full of things to do: golfing, tennis, performing arts, museums, bowling - the list goes on and on. Nearby Manchester and Nashua offer a taste of city life while staying close to home. Goffstown, NH has several large supermarkets as well as small "Mom & Pop" operations. There are many restaurants to choose from and all the fast food chains you've come to expect in most towns. Goffstown has several youth groups and sports to keep children active and busy. Goffstown, New Hampshire is a great place for a young family to purchase their first home.
The Goffstown School District operates under SAU #19 and also teaches students grades seven through twelve from neighboring New Boston, NH. Goffstown's elementary schools include Bartlett Elementary and Maple Avenue Elementary. Mountain View Middle School teaches students in grades five through eight while the Goffstown Area High School maintains grades nine through twelve. New Boston students enter Mountain View Middle School in the seventh grade and attend at Goffstown until graduation. Goffstown also offers kindergarten classes for (Goffstown children only) at the Glen Lake School.
