Franconia, New Hampshire
Located in Grafton County, Franconia, New Hampshire, is a small town of about 1100 people living in what can only be described as “God’s Country”, the thick forests and towering mountains of northern New Hampshire. Franconia resides only a few miles north of what might be considered the most beautiful and stunning natural formations in the entire state and those living here have a plethora of incredible sights, sounds and scenes right in their own backyards.
Franconia, New Hampshire, was originally chartered in 1764, but the grantees were unable to live up to the terms put forth in the grant, so it was again granted in 1772. Following several claim disputes over land rights, settlers in Franconia got down to business mining copper and iron in the forms of pig iron, bar iron and magnetic iron ore. Necessary for farm equipment, magnets and cast iron wares, Franconia residents quickly pulled all the ore out of the ground and closed down all mining operations in the late 1800’s.
Perhaps best known for Franconia Notch and its accompanying State Park, Franconia hosts tourists by the thousands each year who come to witness the spectacular formations and scenery this part of the state offers. Most popular of all was the feature known as “The Old Man of the Mountains”, the New Hampshire icon which, after years of careful maintenance, finally fell and collapsed to rubble in May of 2003. Franconia Notch is also home to the popular “Flume” attraction, a naturally carved gorge cut into the living rock through millennia of water erosion and retreating glaciers. An amazing journey through paths, up steps, both natural and man-made, past waterfalls, caves and boulders, a tour of the Flume will leave you breathless. The Basin is another natural feature carved into the rocks by years of passing water and is sure to take up some space on your camera’s memory card. Cannon Mountain is a part of the Franconia Notch State Park and Franconia itself offers Aerial Tramway rides to its 4100-foot summit. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was the first passenger tramway constructed in the United States
