Belknap County New Hampshire
Belknap County, New Hampshire, is a centrally located county containing ten towns as well as the state’s largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee.
The county was created in 1840 by combining parts of northwestern Strafford County (established in 1769) and northeastern Merrimack County (organized in 1823) and was named after Dr. Jeremy Belknap, a popular preacher, historian and writer. The original county seat was located in Meredith, but since that particular part of Meredith separated in 1855 to become Laconia, the county seat now officially resides in Laconia. The towns that fall within Belknap County’s jurisdiction include Alton, Barnstead, Belmont, Center Harbor, Gilford, Gilmanton, Meredith, New Hampton, Sanbornton and Tilton.
Belknap County is home to many, many activities and attractions. Gunstock Ski Area in Gilford is very popular during the winter months, while Lake Winnipesaukee holds events year-round, from fishing derbies and boat races in the summer to ice fishing and snowmobile races in the winter. The area has many bed and breakfasts as well as resorts, hotels and stylish rental properties.
The area also hosts the annual motorcycle rally known simply as “Bike Week”. For one week in June, motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world descend upon Laconia and the Weirs Beach area for a weeklong celebration of the free-spirited biker lifestyle. Races, hill climbs, scenic tours of the region, live entertainment and hundreds of vendors are available for your enjoyment during this festival of sights and sounds. A spectacle to behold for eighty-four years now, Laconia’s Bike Week is something that must be experienced to be appreciated.
This part of New Hampshire is popular with tourists and locals alike, with all the natural beauty that encompasses the region. Hiking and bicycling are very common activities in the lakes region, second, of course, to waterborne activities like swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, sailing and just plain lying around in the sun working on a tan. There’s always something to do in central New Hampshire.
Belknap County is heavily wooded and not overly developed: the perfect place to put down roots. Homes are available for sale in Belknap County, but they move quickly, so it’s important to have someone in your corner keeping an eye out for what you need.
