Barnstead, New Hampshire
Barnstead, New Hampshire, is located in southern Belknap County in the state’s Lakes Region, just south of Lake Winnepesaukee. Barnstead has a population of about 4700 people, mostly blue-collar workers who commute to the surrounding communities for work. This gives Barnstead a “bedroom community” status, a term that most residents approve. More people, plus less business, usually equals peace and quiet in a fresh country setting – and that’s exactly what you’ll find in Barnstead.
The town was settled in 1727 as one way to deal with the ever-expanding seacoast area. Most of the new residents hailed from either Barnstable, on Cape Cod, or Hempstead, on Long Island. The town was named for both these locations with residents of the community settling on Barnstead as opposed to “Hempstable”. The center of town lied directly on a route that ran from Portsmouth to Wolfeboro, called the Province Road. Residents of Barnstead dubbed the part that ran through the center of their town as “Barnstead Parade”, a name by which it’s still known today.
Barnstable is a sportsman’s paradise, with lakes, ponds and rivers everywhere you turn. Hunting and fishing are very popular activities in this area, as are swimming, motor boating, water sports, sun bathing, canoeing, kayaking and much, much more. In the winter months, Lake Winnepesaukee and several other lakes and ponds hold ice fishing tournaments that draw crowds of young and old alike for miles around. Other winter activities include ice skating, snowmobiling, skiing (both downhill and cross-country) and, for the more adventurous, ice climbing and mountain snow hikes. The natural beauty that surrounds Barnstead is breathtaking regardless of the season, much like all the other areas in the Granite State.
Barnstead residents are like a large family that looks out for each of its members. A member of School Administrative Unit #51, Barnstead educates all its students from preschool through the eighth grade at the Barnstead Elementary School. Students of high school age attend the Prospect Mountain High School in neighboring Alton. Resident children have organized baseball, soccer and basketball to keep them busy, as well as a 4H club and Scouts of America, both Boy and Girl. Busy hands make for happy children – and parents.
