Amherst, New Hampshire is a spectacular small town centered around its village green. The Amherst village green is protected by the local historic district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The small town of nearly 35 acres of land is set along the Soughegan River. In 1728 Amherst, New Hampshire was originally established as Narragansett No. 3, and was later known as Souhegan No. 3. The town became recognized as Amherst in 1760, named after British commander, General Jeffrey Amherst. Amherst became the first seat of Hillsborough County  in 1769 and was home to the courthouse, jail and the whipping post. Throughout the next 75 years Amherst became smaller. Land grants were offered and today make up other towns including Merrimack, Milford, and Mont Vernon.

During 1879 the governing offices that were previously located in Amherst were moved to the cities of Manchester and Nashua. The courthouse was then transformed into the Amherst town hall. The founder of the New York Tribune, Horace Greeley, was born in Amherst in 1811 and his home still stands in the town today.

The business and commercial area in Amherst is mainly located on Route 101A, allowing the town to maintain its beautiful historic background. Conveniently located in Amherst are the Amherst Country Club, the Souhegan Woods Golf Course, a smaller Buckmeadow Golf Club, and Baboosic Lake. At  Baboosic Lake, residents of Amherst are welcome to enjoy activities such as swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing on its quiet 222 acres. Amherst offers a variety of activities for children and families, including their yearly Christmas tree lighting, Fourth of JuIy celebration, farmers market, band concerts, and many more. In surrounding towns you will find flea markets, antique shops, playgrounds, and different yearly town events. Amherst is located less than 10 miles from the cities of Nashua and Manchester making Amherst an ideal location to buy and own a home!
