Unity, New HampshireThe small town of Unity, New Hampshire, is located in Sullivan County in the western half of the state. With a population of less than 1800 people, Unity is by far not the largest town in the area, but the community spirit of this little village more than makes up for it’s relatively low population. Unity is a town full of caring, friendly people who go out of their way to make others feel comfortable and welcome in their town. What was to become Unity first began in 1753 as Buckingham, named after John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire. The land grants, however, were disputed since some grants were issued during the time when Massachusetts governed the NH colony while others were handed out by New Hampshire’s Governor Benning Wentworth. The conflict and confusion was sorted out in 1764 when Governor Wentworth allowed the grantees to determine the size of each tract of land in the dispute then granted new land accordingly. The dispute was put to rest and the town was appropriately renamed Unity and incorporated that same year. Primarily a town of sheep farmers, Unity was also home to several mills producing grains, lumber, textiles and more. Competition with larger nearby towns drove most of these mills out of business, but residents adapted, building distilleries and clearing land for more farms. Today, most of the farms have either gone under or been purchased for conservation purposes. The town of Unity has little business or industry today and most of its workforce are employed in Claremont or other larger towns in the area. Unity lies close to the Vermont border and is tucked in the rolling hills and thick forests of western NH. The city of Claremont, NH, is only five miles up the road from Unity, the college town of Keene is about a thirty minute drive south, and Manchester, NH, sits a good hour’s drive southeast. But don’t think there’s nothing going on in the area – Lake Sunapee is just ten minutes from Unity and offers plenty of sun and fun for the whole family. Boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, snorkeling, or just plain lying around in a beautiful lakeside setting – it’s all waiting for you at Lake Sunapee. Unity is a small town and has a relatively small student population, well under 300 children. However, Unity does provide education for resident children from kindergarten age through the eighth grade at the Unity Elementary School. High school-age children are educated at Stevens High School in Claremont, NH. Unity is a member of the School Administrative Unit #6. Unity, NH, is a great place to get away from it all. Most of the town remains undeveloped and looks to stay that way. Residents of Unity enjoy the tranquility their little slice of heaven affords them.
