Tamworth, New Hampshire

The town of Tamworth, New Hampshire, is located just northeast of the state's largest lake, Winnipesaukee, in Carroll County.  Far enough off the beaten path to be considered “country”, Tamworth is actually a lively, busy little town with hard-working people who enjoy the quiet solitude their little town offers them.  Approximately 2500 people call Tamworth home and wouldn’t trade it for any other town in the state.

Tamworth was granted to John Webster and others in 1766 and was so-named by Governor Benning Wentworth for his dear friend Admiral Washington Shirley, Viscount Tamworth.  Admiral Shirley’s daughter, Selina, was instrumental in the development of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.  Arguments reigned for several years regarding the Tamworth boundaries and in 1796 a legislative committee was directed to find and fix the line between Tamworth and Eaton as well as Tamworth and Albany (then called Burton).  Although the lines were to be final and concrete, another committee was formed in 1808 to refine the lines between Tamworth and the towns of Eaton, Albany (still Burton until 1833) and Sandwich.  Those lines stand today as they did two hundred years ago.

Tamworth was home to the Chinook Kennels, the kennels that raised the dogs used by Admiral Byrd during his Artic Expeditions as well as the dogs once utilized by the Army’s Search and Rescue units.  Also located in town is the Barnstormers Theater, established by the son of President Grover Cleveland, Francis.  Francis helped support the theater until he died in 1995 and today Barnstormers is believed to be the longest continuously running professional theater in New Hampshire.

There is plenty to do in Tamworth if you’re a fan of the great outdoors.  There is camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, boating and far too much more to list.  For resident children, Tamworth offers organized sports in the way of baseball, soccer, football and basketball.  For out-of-towners, Tamworth has beaches for sun worshiping, swimming, fishing, and boating as well as mountains for climbing, hiking, and just plain picture taking.  One visit to Tamworth will have you considering a move to Tamworth.

Tamworth is a member of School Administrative Unit #13 and administers the Kenneth A. Brett School for resident children from kindergarten age through the eighth grade.  High school students from Tamworth attend the Kennett High School in North Conway.

Tamworth is a beautiful town with a wonderful community spirit.  Residents will actually talk to you on the street and everyone has a smile and a wave at the ready.  Towns like Tamworth are getting harder and harder to find these days.  Homes for sale in Tamworth move quickly, so you must too.  If you’re interested in buying a home in Tamworth or any of the other 200+ wonderful towns within the Granite State, you must first contact Jim Miller Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage at (603) 801-3987.  Jim has years of NH real estate experience behind him and knows the ins and outs of the NH real estate market.  Jim wants to help you into the home of your dreams – call him today and make it all come true for you.
