Sullivan, New HampshireAnother of several tiny towns in New Hampshire’s Cheshire County, Sullivan is home to about 800 residents in southwestern NH. Small in size, but big in character, Sullivan is a New England holdover from 200 years ago. Sullivan was created using parts of several neighboring towns including Keene, Nelson (formerly Packersfield), Stoddard and Gilsum. Residents in the outlying areas of those town banded together and formally petitioned to combine as their own town – something they felt would be far more convenient than traveling three hours to church services and town meetings. The town was incorporated and named Sullivan in 1787, one year after General John Sullivan was elected president of New Hampshire (a short-lived position which, of course, no longer exists). General Sullivan was also Adjutant General to President Washington, a Major General of the Northern Army and a member of the Continental Congress. Sullivan was a small farming and hunting community until the farms of the Midwest forced many New England farms out of business. The town’s population dwindled to less than 400 residents by 1970. In the past 35 years, however, Sullivan’s population has more than doubled, mostly due to the realization that Sullivan offers a tight-knit community with strong family values, has plenty of property available, is very convenient to Keene and is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the state – the rolling foothills of Mt. Monadnock. Sullivan has very little industry in town and plans to keep it that way. The undisturbed beauty in the area will remain so for a long time to come. Sullivan, NH, is a part of School Administrative Unit #38. The town is a member of the Monadnock Regional School District, which also includes the towns of Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Richmond, Roxbury, Sullivan, Swanzey, and Troy. Sullivan maintains its own elementary school in town, the aptly named Sullivan Elementary School, but has no plans to construct additional schools at this time. Resident students in grades five through twelve attend the Monadnock Regional Middle and High Schools, both located in Swanzey, NH. New Hampshire towns don’t get a lot smaller than Sullivan.
