Stratham, New HampshireStratham, New Hampshire is a small, somewhat undeveloped town of about 7100 people located just north of Exeter. Stratham is primarily a bedroom community for commuters working in Portsmouth but not wanting to live in the busy city. Much of Stratham is rolling farmlands no longer in agricultural use. These farms are slowly being developed into residential neighborhoods in this steadily growing community. The land to eventually become Stratham was originally a part of Hampton. This already-settled area was annexed by Exeter in 1695 and residents petitioned to become their own township in 1716. This was granted and Stratham became the sixth town to be incorporated in New Hampshire. The town was given its name by Massachusetts Governor Samuel Shute in honor of his friend Wriothesley Russell, Baron Howland of Streatham. Stratham has historically been a farming community until after World War II when automobiles gave people the freedom to live a good distance from where they worked. Quiet rural towns like Stratham became less farmlands and more neighborhoods which is where Stratham stands today. Stratham is a quiet town with few main routes but many back roads. Stratham has its share of businesses including Timberland, DeMoulas, Shaw’s and Staples but undoubtedly the most well-known aspect of this little town is the annual Stratham Fair, usually held during the last weekend of July. A classic New England style fair, the Stratham Fair boasts live musical acts, 4-H events (such as cattle shows, tractor pulls, an auction, dog shows and forestry demonstrations), baking competitions, clown acts, puppet shows and vendors by the score. There are also amusement park rides, pony rides, face painting and countless other activities to be enjoyed by the children. A mammoth success every year (even in the rain), the Stratham Fair has been entertaining fairgoers for forty years and looks to continue that tradition indefinitely. Stratham is a part of School Administrative Unit #21. Resident children in grades one through five attend the Stratham Memorial School. Stratham student in grades six through eight are educated at the Cooperative Middle School in Exeter, and students in grades nine through twelve attend Exeter High School as part of the Exeter Cooperative. Close to the seacoast, but serene nonetheless, Stratham is a great place to start a family or retire in comfort.
