Sandown, New Hampshire

A small, out-of-the-way town of about 6000 residents, Sandown, New Hampshire is located in southern NH's Rockingham County.  Generally considered a bedroom community for Massachusetts workers, Sandown’s tightly-knit neighborhoods lend to a feeling of family for those fortunate enough to live here.  Those living in Sandown enjoy the privacy of heavily wooded forests with the big city convenience of nearby Manchester.  Classic New England charm shines brightly in this small town, from the nearly 250 year-old Sandown Meeting House to the historic Sandown Train Depot and that’s the way the town fathers plan to keep it.

Originally a part of nearby Kingstown (now Kingston), Sandown severed ties and was incorporated in 1756 by Governor Benning Wentworth.  Sandown was so-named for the village of Sandown on the Isle of Wight off the coast of England.  These two towns are the only ones known to share the name “Sandown”.  Early settlers in this town tilled the soil and developed several successful farms but eventually harnessed the power of the Exeter River and managed to operate several mills for a time.  These operations were small and brief, however, and it is unknown what items they produced.  With the advent of the railroad coming to town in 1870, Sandown became a focal point for many surrounding communities.  This was short lived, though, mostly due to the proliferation of the automobile in the 1920’s.  The railroad closed in 1933 and for the next twenty years Sandown quietly returned to its farming roots.  After WWII, Sandown slowly began to evolve into the bedroom community we know it as today.

Three main routes straddle and cross Sandown east/west and north/south.  These are Routes 102, 121A and 111, all giving quick and easy access to most anywhere in southeastern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts while still staying far enough off the main highways to give travelers a true sense of the New England countryside.  Manchester can be reached from Sandown in about twenty minutes, the exciting beaches of the NH seacoast in about forty-five, Boston in under an hour and Sandown residents can be viewing New Hampshire’s stunning White Mountains after just over an hour’s ride north.  Sandown itself is a haven for hikers, bicyclists, snowmobilers and cross country skiers because of the abandoned railroad bed which itself has a large network of trails branching outward for miles in many different directions.  Flea markets and yard sales are a popular attraction during the summer months as well as Sandown’s popular “Old Home Day” celebration.  Strong in family values and a sense of belonging, Sandown residents treat everyone as family, whether you live there or not.

Sandown, NH is a part of SAU# 55.  Sandown student in grades one through three attend the Sandown North School, grades four through eight attend Sandown Central School and grades nine through twelve are taught at Timberlane High School in nearby Plaistow, NH.  Timberlane is part of a local school cooperative that includes Atkinson, Danville, Plaistow and Sandown.
