Incorporated as a township in 1760 by governor Benning Wentworth and renewed in 1762 by King George II, the town’s name is believed to have been derived from the Earl of Peterborough, but no documentation has been brought to light proving this claim. Peterborough maintains its own elementary school (the Peterborough Elementary School) and sends students in grades five through eight to South Meadow School and student in grades nine through twelve to Contoocook Valley Regional High School.
