North Hampton, New Hampshire The seaside resort town of North Hampton, New Hampshire lies central on the small rocky coastline of the Granite State. With less beachfront area than its neighbor, Hampton, to the south, North Hampton is a quieter, calmer, less commercialized version of the wildly popular southern part of the New Hampshire coast. With less than 5000 residents and far fewer tourists, the affluent town of North Hampton is a great place to either start a family or retire in comfort. The area to become North Hampton was first settled in 1639. Originally known as “North Hill” or “North Hill Parish”, the settlement was a part of the much larger town of Hampton to the south. After New Hampshire became its own province in 1741, a petition from the parish’s residents was granted and North Hampton came into being in 1742. For over a hundred years, the people of North Hampton were primarily farmers, hunters and fisherman. The advent of the railroad in neighboring Hampton in the late 1800’s gave rise to vacationing on the New Hampshire seacoast with Little Boar’s Head, a small peninsula in the southernmost part of North Hampton, becoming a favorite spot for wealthy citizens seeking a summer home. The beautiful architecture, much of it based on Victorian and Edwardian designs, still stands today. North Hampton is more than just a seaside community in southern NH. Route 1 travels through the town’s center with businesses lining both sides northbound and southbound. Most residences are located in quiet neighborhoods just off the back roads and streets that connect Route 1 to the seacoast’s Route 1A or the many roads heading inland. North Hampton is home to a Shaw’s Supermarket, a Home Depot, a Marshall’s and many restaurants and small shops. North Hampton is only fifteen minutes south of historic Portsmouth, NH and twenty minutes north of the Massachusetts border. Another historic New England town, Exeter, NH, borders North Hampton to the west – everywhere you turn, New England’s history is there. Convenient to east/west Route 101 as well as north/south Route 95, North Hampton residents can reach Manchester in about forty-five minutes, Boston in about an hour and the White Mountains of NH are just over an hour north. But who wants to leave this wonderful little town on the seacoast? North Hampton maintains schools for resident students in grades one through eight. Students in grades nine through twelve are a part of the Winnacunnet Cooperative and are educated at the Winnacunnet High School in Hampton.
