Newport, New Hampshire

Newport, New Hampshire, is a large town of about 6600 people located in the western part of the state.  Heavily populated for a small town, Newport is still surrounded by the natural beauty that permeates the entire Granite State and the people who live here would never swap it for a less populated town elsewhere in New England.  Newport is home.

The area to become Newport was first granted in 1753 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth.  The town was then known as Grenville, so-named for George Grenville, the brother-in-law of William Pitt, Prime Minister of England.  Not many settlers made Grenville their home, so in 1761 the town was regranted to other settlers as Newport, in honor of another British statesman, Henry Newport.  Since the Connecticut River was the only means of transport to the town, these new settlers also had a hard time making a go of things.  In 1767 a new road was constructed that led to Charlestown making travel much easier and the town’s charter was renewed in 1769.

Newport residents were unhappy with the way they were being treated by the NH government, and so in 1781 the town joined a growing band of 33 other NH towns that were seceding from New Hampshire and joining Vermont.  The following year, however, President George Washington dissolved their new relationship with our neighbor state and all 34 towns returned to their rightful places within the confines of The Granite State.

Newport residents found their town had rich soil and many of them turned to farming as their chief means of support.  Others constructed mills alongside the Sugar River and began producing furniture, flour and other grains, lumber, cotton and more.  In 1820, the town joined forces with Claremont and Sunapee to construct the Sunapee Dam in an attempt to keep the mills functioning even during droughts.  The dam still stands to this day.

Newport offers residents and visitors alike splendid views of the green New Hampshire countryside.  The town is home to several stores and markets for the convenience of its residents, but is far from the strip mall towns that are creeping over the border of Massachusetts to the south.  Newport is a quiet town with one main industry employing over 1000 people in town, the Sturm Ruger & Company firearms manufacturer.  Considered a part of the extended family by many in town, Stuger has been employing residents for decades and looks poised to continue doing so well into the future.

Newport, NH, is a member of SAU #43 and maintains the school district along with the towns of Croydon and Sunapee.  Younger children attend the Richards Elementary School and the Towle Elementary School, students in the sixth to eighth grade attend the Newport Middle School and the older students go to the Newport High School.  All four schools are located within Newport.

Newport is a friendly yet busy community filled with hard working people and happy faces.  The beauty in the area is undeniable and homes are snatched up quickly when they hit the market.  That’s why you need Jim Miller Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage on your side.  Jim is eager to find the home that fits you perfectly and help make the transition as smooth as possible.  Jim has years of NH real estate experience under his belt and wants to put it to work for you.  Call him right now at (603) 801-3987 and let’s get the ball rolling.
