Newington, New HampshireThe commercial capital of the New Hampshire seacoast, Newington is home to less than 1000 people. Sitting just west of historic Portsmouth, Newington is located on the south banks of the Piscataqua River and is a haven for commercial business. With close proximity to Routes 1, 1A and I-95, travel into Maine takes but five minutes over one of the three bridges leading to that state. The town of Newington was first a part of Dover, NH called “Bloody Point” because of a particularly violent battle between colonists and Native Americans in the late 1600’s. By 1640 a ferry service called “Trickey’s Ferry” brought passengers and livestock back and forth between Bloody Point and Hilton’s Point, also in Dover. A meetinghouse was built in 1712 initiating the area’s segregation as “Newington Parish”, so-named for an old English village. In 1725 the parsonage was constructed and, still standing, is now considered one of the oldest in the country. The town was finally incorporated in 1764 by Governor Benning Wentworth and just thirty years later a bridge was constructed over Little Bay eliminating the need for a ferry service. Today you can find Newington’s 110-acre “Old Town Center Historic District” listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Home to hundreds of businesses, Newington has anything a consumer could want. The sprawling Fox Run Mall has dozens upon dozen of shops and stores offering wares of all sorts. The Fox Run Mall boasts a Sears, JC Penney, Macy’s, Yankee Candle, Victoria’s Secret, Eastern Mountain Sports, several jewelers, a food court, bookstores, electronics specialty stores and anything else you might need. The nearby Crossing at Fox Run is home to a Best Buy, Staples, Barnes & Noble Bookstore and a 12-screen movie cinema. Also located very close by is a Wal-Mart, a Home Depot, Shaw’s, K-Mart, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and many more stores to suit all your needs. Newington is also home to several car dealerships as well as many fine and casual dining establishments. Anything you want, anything you need – it’s here in Newington, including air travel by way of Pease International Tradeport, over half of which is physically located in the town of Newington. Newington, NH is a part of SAU #50, and maintains classes for students in kindergarten through the sixth grade at the Newington Public School. Local students in grades seven and eight attend the Portsmouth Middle School while grades nine through twelve are taught at the Portsmouth High School. With less than a total of one hundred Newington students in all, there are no plans to construct additional schools in town. Newington is a busy town with an abundance of commerce.
