Newfields, New HampshireWith an overall size of only 7.2 square miles, Newfields, New Hampshire has the distinction of being the second smallest town by area in Rockingham County. This little village of 1500 people sits in relative obscurity beside the Squamscott River. Regarded now as a bedroom community for the nearby towns of Exeter, Portsmouth and even Dover, Newfields plans on staying small and serene while the rest of the world gets larger and louder. First a part of Exeter, NH, Newfields became a part of Newmarket when that town split off from Exeter in 1727. Later referred to as South Newmarket, the area had been called Newfield Village as early as the 1680’s. Around 1775 a bridge was constructed that spanned the Squamscott River and linked the small village to neighboring Stratham, NH. The route to Exeter was thereby shortened and wound up directing travelers around the center of Newfields leaving the town mostly to its own. In 1880 Dr. John M. Broadhead presented the gift of a library and an additional $10,000 to the town under the condition that the town be named Newfields and in 1895 the town was incorporated as such. Newfields is located somewhat “out-of-the-way” due to there being only three state roads entering and exiting this tiny community. There is only one major industrial company in town, Hutchinson Sealing, an auto parts manufacturer with nearly 300 employees. The next largest business in town is a twenty-employee sportswear producer. There is but one gas station in town and two general stores. This is perfect for Newfields residents. They have no interest in bringing in big business only to lose their small-town charm. Locals enjoy hunting, fishing, boating and camping with plenty of opportunities for all those activities and more. Nearby Epping, NH has a Wal-Mart, a Lowes Home Improvement Center and all the fast food restaurants you could want, while Exeter has everything else you can imagine, so Newfields has no need for and no plans for expansion any time soon. Newfields residents are happy with their town just the way it is. Newfields is a part of SAU#16 and maintains its own elementary school, the Newfields Elementary School for kindergarten-age students up to fifth grade. Newfields is a part of the Exeter Region Cooperative so student in grades six through eight attend the Exeter Cooperative Middle School while students in grades nine through twelve are taught at the Exeter High School. Due to its small student population, Newfields has no plans to change the current agreement. Newfields is a great town for the new family or the retired couple. It’s far enough out of the way that traffic is minimal, but close enough to everything to eliminate long drives to the grocery store.
