Merrimack, New Hampshire

The large yet quiet town of Merrimack, New Hampshire lies on the west side of the Merrimack River in eastern Hillsborough County.  Just north of Nashua, Merrimack is a community of 27,000 residents who enjoy the nearby convenience of the second largest city in New Hampshire while living in a town that maintains an old country flair.  Rich in agricultural history, this town has transformed from thriving farmland into a classic example of the many bedroom communities that have recently become home to many Massachusetts workers.  Low taxes, easy commutes and the beautiful southern New Hampshire element are only a few reasons that so many people have made Merrimack their choice for living.

Settled in 1722 and incorporated in 1746, Merrimack was named for the river beside which it sits.  Initially established as a ferry landing for transportation across the Merrimack River, the town grew slowly as farmland was tilled and worked.  Matthew Thornton, one of the original signers of the Constitution lived in Merrimack and owned one of the ferry landings - still called Thornton's Ferry to this day.  In the mid 1800's Boston and Maine railroad laid tracks through the town and operated several stops there for about a hundred years.  Eventually the automobile eliminated the need for a train.  Shortly thereafter, farmland started being purchased for residential development and Merrimack slowly became the town it is today.

Ideally located between Manchester just minutes north and Nashua just minutes south, Merrimack, New Hampshire is convenient to anywhere and anything.  Outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, boating, golf, tennis, swimming or biking are available in Merrimack.  Don't want to go outside?  Merrimack offers many stores and shops, cinemas, bowling - even indoor ice skating.  If that's not enough, you can visit the Anheuser-Busch brewery and take a tour of the facility.  Boston, Massachusetts is only 50 miles away - the White Mountains are even closer.  When you're done playing, coming home to Merrimack feels just like that: you've come home.  Quiet residential neighborhoods on tree-lined roads characterizes perfectly Merrimack's rural feel.

The Merrimack School District, SAU #26, includes three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.  Thornton's Ferry Elementary School, Reed's Ferry Elementary School and Mastricola Elementary School caters to grades one through five, including the recent addition of a kindergarten.  The Merrimack Middle School maintains grades six through eight and Merrimack High School teaches students grades nine through twelve.
