Lempster, New HampshireAnother one of New Hampshire’s western-region small towns, Lempster is a community of hard-working, blue-collar residents who truly love their little town. As with most communities in the western part of the state, Lempster is rife with thick woods and abundant wildlife making it a great destination when you’re ready for an escape from the busy, modern world. Lempster began its existence in 1735 with the designation of “Number 9”, the ninth fort in a linear grouping of defensive positions designed to protect against attacks from Native Americans. In 1753 the town was regranted as Dupplin by Governor Benning Wentworth. The name came from Sir Thomas Hay, Lord Dupplin of Scotland and the principal man in charge of the Nova Scotia settlement. In 1761 the town was granted yet again, this time as Lempster, so-named for Sir Thomas Fermor of Lempster, England – a distant relation of Governor Wentworth. The settlers under that grant could not meet their obligations, so the town was regranted one final time in 1767 – with one grant extension issued in 1772, the same year of its incorporation. Lempster, NH, is one of many fine small towns that dot the state’s western half. Most are less populous than New Hampshire’s southern or eastern borders, but that’s one of the main draws for people looking to purchase homes in quiet communities. It’s getting harder and harder to find a way out of the rat race and many people are turning to the quaint little close-knit communities of western New Hampshire. With the state’s natural attractions to the north, ski resorts by the dozen, clean rivers, streams and lakes, it’s easy to see why people are flocking to the Granite State. Seclusion and tranquility never sounded or looked so good. Lempster is a member of School Administrative Unit #71 and one half of the Goshen-Lempster Cooperative. Like students in Goshen, high school students in Lempster are tuitioned to one of the following schools, based upon the location of the student’s home: Newport High, Sunapee High, Kearsarge Regional High in North Sutton, Keene High, Fall Mountain in Langdon, or Stevens High in Claremont.
