Lee, New Hampshire The lovely town of Lee, New Hampshire is an out-of-the way community of about 4500 people located in the southeastern part of the state near historic Dover. Lee has little commercial business and is widely regarded as a bedroom community for those working in Dover, Portsmouth and Exeter as well as home to many faculty members teaching at the nearby University of New Hampshire (UNH). The area to become Lee began its existence as a part of Durham, NH. Separating from that town in 1766, Lee became one of the final towns to be chartered by then-Governor Benning Wentworth, the man responsible for chartering over 125 New Hampshire towns during his time in office. The town was named Lee in honor of the governor’s friend and war hero General Charles Lee, who fought with General George Washington in the French and Indian Wars. Charles Lee also fought under the command of Washington in the American Revolution at the cost of forfeiting his estates back in England – an act which Wentworth deemed worthy of remembering by offering this namesake. Lee has little waterpower and for many years was a simple farming community, growing produce and raising livestock. With the construction of UNH in 1866, the town started to grow. Professors and students alike found homes in Lee as well as in Durham, Madbury and Newmarket. Today Lee continues to provide housing for students and staff members while maintaining a relatively slow rate of growth. Several routes cut through Lee, including Route 125, Route 4, and Routes 155 and 152. These roads give easy access to surrounding communities as well as long distance travel. Lee is but a ten-minute drive to Dover, fifteen to Portsmouth and about forty to Manchester. Lee is home to the Lee Raceway, offering Friday and Saturday night racing during the spring, summer and fall. Casual dining can be found in Lee, as well as camping, hiking, cross county skiing and other outdoor activities. Lee offers organized youth sports in the form of basketball, hockey, football, soccer and baseball and has a municipal park that can be enjoyed at any age. Lee is a member of the Oyster River Cooperate School District, along with the neighboring towns of Durham and Madbury. Most Lee children from kindergarten age through the fourth grade are taught at the Mast Way Elementary School, while students in grades five through eight attend the Oyster River Cooperative Middle School in Durham. High school age children from Lee attend the Oyster River Cooperative High School, also located in Durham. Lee has no plans to build additional schools at this time.
