Jackson, New HampshireJackson, New Hampshire, is a small town of less than 1000 people located in the mountainous region of northern Carroll County. Famous for its many inns, bed and breakfasts and as the perfect spot for weddings and honeymoons, Jackson welcomes everyone with a special warmth that’s getting harder and harder to find in today’s busy world. Jackson is filled with sweeping vistas that are well suited for photography, paintings or just viewing with loved ones. A visit to Jackson is always memorable. The land that makes up Jackson, New Hampshire, originally consisted of several relatively large land grants from Governor John Wentworth in the mid-1700’s. Known then as “New Madbury”, so-named for the other town of Madbury in NH, the first settlers in the area were the Copp family who moved in shortly after a road was constructed through Pinkham Notch in 1772. The town was soon renamed “Adams” after President John Adams, the president at the time. When the town finally incorporated in 1829, the name Jackson was chosen to honor the newly-inaugurated president, Andrew Jackson, at the behest of then-governor Benjamin Pierce, a friend and political ally. As word about the majestic beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains spread throughout New England, tourists began flocking to Jackson to see for themselves. By the 1870’s, rail service had extended all the way up to Bartlett, Jackson’s neighbor to the south. Soon large hotels and resorts were being constructed to accommodate the influx of people wanting to bear witness to Jackson’s stunning surroundings. With the advent of the automobile in the early 1900’s, the railway service petered out and many of the grand hotels followed suit, but today Jackson is still home to many inns and retreats and lends the perfect backdrop for weddings, receptions, business meetings, family gatherings and more. With tourism being Jackson’s biggest industry, living in this town is a delight. Little commercial clutter and no visible factories or conglomerates allow residents to go about their lives without the concern of urban sprawl or devalued property. There’s something special about being able to walk out your front door and be standing in a town that people drive for miles just to see.
