Hampstead, New Hampshire With about 9000 residents, Hampstead, NH is one of the fastest-growing towns in the state. The town was first formed when a change in boundary lines delineated Massachusetts and the newly developed province of New Hampshire in 1739. Ten years later, the citizens of Timberlane Parish petitioned the governor to incorporate their town. Governor Benning Wentworth bestowed the name of Hampstead upon the town in honor of his close friend William Pitt, Earl of Chatham. Pitt, then the English Prime Minister, was born in Hampstead, England and was a vocal supporter of the American cause. Hampstead remained a very small, quiet village until the advent of the automobile which allowed workers to live far from their employers. The serene nature of this picture-postcard community held a great attraction to those who no longer wanted to live in the big cities and over the past sixty years Hampstead has bloomed into the tranquil bedroom community we know it as today. Hampstead residents enjoy the seclusion of their little town. While it remains a simple task to drive the short distance to a metropolis like nearby Manchester, NH, most Hampstead residents prefer the peace and solitude found only in the New Hampshire forests. Hampstead is home to several ponds and streams, so fishing, swimming and boating are popular recreational activities in town. Hiking and bicycling are also popular since Hampstead has many trails meandering through it's heavily wooded forests. For day trips, the NH seacoast is only about a half hour away, the White Mountains about an hour and Boston also an hour. But for communing with nature, Hampstead is hard to beat. Hampstead is a part of SAU#55 and maintains its own elementary school (Hampstead Central School) and middle school (Hampstead Middle School).
