Gilmanton, New Hampshire

Gilmanton, New Hampshire, is a town of about 3700 people located deep in the lakes region of the state.  Though the town doesn’t actually border the state’s largest lake, Winnipesaukee, it does have several small ponds, lakes and rivers of its own.  Surrounded by tall pines and rolling hills, Gilmanton is a serene little town without much industry to clutter things up.

Though the town was first chartered by Massachusetts Lt. Governor John Wentworth in 1727, the area was not truly settled until around 1761, due mostly to the lingering threat of attacks by Native Americans.  Because 24 members of the Gilman family received grants, the town was named “Gilmantown” which was eventually reduced to Gilmanton.  The town started out life much larger than it currently is, becoming smaller as villages and parishes broke off to form their own communities.  Of these, Belmont, NH, appeared on the map and now has over 7000 residents, as well as Gilford, NH, which has about 7500.

Gilmanton is not the summer resort town that several of its neighbors wound up becoming.  Not having a border on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee greatly reduces the number of visitors to this town, but that’s exactly how the population wants it.  Gilmanton’s philosophy is one of letting the other towns have the tourists while their residents enjoy the tranquility and fresh air of central New Hampshire.  All the vacation amenities are just up the road, all of the sites and sounds, just a short drive away.  But most Gilmanton residents are happy to have the streets to themselves instead of waiting for the tourists to clear out.  Most Gilmanton residents like things just the way they are – quiet and comfortable.  Besides, with their town’s location set in the heart of the lakes region, no one in town has to travel far to find a good time.  Skiing in the winter, boating in the summer and a myriad of other area activities keep families busy year round.  You’ll never be for want of something to do when you live in this part of the state.

Gilmanton is a member of School Administrative Unit #79 and educates its own students from kindergarten through the eighth grade at the Gilmanton School.  High school-age children from Gilmanton are tuitioned at Gilford High School in, naturally, nearby Gilford.  Gilmanton has no current plans to construct any additional schools in town.
