Freedom, New Hampshire Situated along eastern New Hampshire’s shared border with Maine will you find Freedom, New Hampshire, a small, but vital town filled with forests, rolling hills and amazing scenery. Freedom is a town of private, quiet residents who enjoy the tranquility that New Hampshire’s woodlands can provide. With a population of less than 1500, Freedom is small in size, but big on charm. The new settlers had different religious beliefs than the folks that had already made Effingham their home, and this, coupled with other cultural differences, made life in Effingham uncomfortable for many living there. Because of this disharmony, the northern part of town, known simply as North Effingham, broke off and became its own town. North Effingham was incorporated in 1831 and the populace voted to change the town’s name to Freedom the following year. Farming was the primary source of support for both Effingham and Freedom residents for many, many years. The picturesque beauty of the area was captured in several books, such as “The Enormous Egg” and “The House at Loon Lake”. Today the town is home to several campgrounds including Camp Calumet, Camp Cody, Camp Huckins, Danforth Bay Campground and Totem Pole Park. The lush woodlands and excellent location lend to a wonderful camping experience for all. Several of the campgrounds listed are summer camps for children meaning many adults who summered there as children have wonderful memories of the area and the town itself. Freedom has other businesses in town as well, like Bobby Sue’s Ice Cream Shop, Freedom Market, International Paper Company, Federal Piping and more. Most residents work in nearby communities giving Freedom a feeling of being a bedroom community, but it is more of a blue-collar community of hardworking families who enjoy the open air of central New Hampshire. More down-to-earth people, you will not find. Freedom is a member of School Administrative Unit #13 and maintains education for grades one through six at the Freedom Elementary School. All other Freedom students are tuitioned over at Conway, New Hampshire in the Kennett Middle and High schools. Freedom is a great place to live and homes are often available for sale there.
