Epping, New Hampshire Located at “The Crossroads of NH”, Epping is a small town with big-city ideas. Epping was originally a part of Exeter, NH, one of the first four townships to appear in New Hampshire. In 1741, Epping petitioned for and was granted its own charter and was incorporated later that same year. Epping was the last town incorporated by a Massachusetts governor before the province of New Hampshire became independent of that state. It is believed that Epping was named after the Epping Forest, a large tract of land used for hunting by British nobles. Epping was primarily a farming community but was also known for the fine clay bricks produced by its brickyard. Today Epping is a center of retail sales for itself and the surrounding communities. Within just the past few years Epping has seen the development of a new Lowes Home Improvement Center, a Super Wal-Mart, several restaurants, a Walgreen pharmacy and many other smaller stores. Epping has all your fast food needs covered with a McDonalds, a Burger King, a Wendy’s, Quizno Subs, a Subway Sub Shop and several pizza parlors. For entertainment, Epping offers Star Speedway, (a NASCAR sanctioned oval racetrack), the New England Dragway (a quarter-mile dragstrip) or, for a more highbrow experience, the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts. An abandoned railroad bed runs through Epping giving hikers, bikers and anyone who enjoys a walk through untouched woodlands on an enjoyable, relatively flat trail that leads west to Manchester or east toward the seacoast.
