Effingham, New Hampshire

Effingham, New Hampshire, is a town of about 1400 residents located on the central eastern edge of the state, bordering Maine.  As with most central and northern towns in the Granite State, Effingham is surrounded by thick woods, pristine lakes and streams and holds gorgeous mountain views.  While not in the White Mountains themselves, Effingham is officially a part of the lakes region and resides only a few minutes from one of the northeast’s largest fresh-water bodies, Lake Winnipesaukee.

The town of Effingham was first known as Leavittstown, for a family of the same name from Hampton, NH, who settled the area in the 1740’s.  The governor’s initial charter of the town began in 1749, but when the town incorporated in 1778, Governor Benning Wentworth chose to name the town after the Howard family, the Earls of Effingham.  The governor was related to the Howards by marriage.

Effingham has the distinction of being the home of the country’s first “normal school”, an institution devoted to the standardized education of teachers.  Established in 1830 on the Effingham Union Academy Building’s second floor, the school was the idea of Maine Senator James W. Bradbury and has since been implemented across the United States and the world.

Effingham is a town of little industry, relying mostly on the tourist trade drawn by the Lakes Region and the Great North woods of New Hampshire.  Restaurants, gas stations and several small stores make up much of Effingham’s commercial businesses, but the town does have the good fortune of being directly beside Route 16, the main north-south artery on the eastern side of the state.  Most of Effingham’s residents are happy with their town’s location and lack of large businesses.  They rightly feel that their town is better off without the increased burden that large corporations and sprawling retail outlets bring with them.  Everything anyone in Effingham could want can be found nearby in Ossippee, NH, including fine dining, entertainment and shopping centers.  Effingham itself is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path kind of town with a slow pace and strong community spirit.  Perfect for raising a family or retiring in seclusion, Effingham homes sell fast.

Effingham is a member of School Administrative Unit #49 and maintains its own Effingham Elementary School for resident students from kindergarten age through the sixth grade.  Students in grades seven and eight attend the Kingswood Regional Middle School while those in grades nine through twelve are educated at the Kingswood Regional High School.  Both the middle and high schools are located in Wolfeboro and Effingham has no plans to construct more schools of their own at this time.

If you’re in the market to buy a home and you’re looking for the peace and quiet of the New Hampshire countryside without having to live all the way up in the White Mountains, Effingham is an ideal town.  Far away from the urban sprawl faced by southern NH, Effingham offers you the perfect spot to settle down.  Houses sell quickly in this region of the state, so you need to have someone watching the market for you.  That person should be Jim Miller of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage – call Jim at (603) 801-3987 right now.  Jim is courteous, professional and will look out for your best interests alone.  When you’re buying property in New Hampshire, you need someone in your corner – call Jim today and let him turn your dreams into reality.
