Cornish, New Hampshire

Cornish, New Hampshire, is located in Sullivan County on the western edge of the state, bordering Vermont and the Connecticut River.  Tucked into the rolling hills and mountainous terrain of western NH, Cornish is home to about 1800 people.  Cornish is basically a bedroom community for those working in other larger towns in the area, but also has a couple of small businesses and plenty of activities for young and old alike.

“Mast Camp” was established in 1763 and was called such because the area was a jumping point for shipping downriver all the tall, straight trees soon to be masts for the Royal Navy.  The town was properly incorporated in 1765 by Governor Benning Wentworth and named “Cornish” after Sir Samuel Cornish, a well-known admiral in the British Navy.  The town was used for many years as a shipping port for goods in and out of western and central New Hampshire, but today is regarded as a quiet, hard-working community filled with friendly people and vibrant families.

Cornish has many reasons to attract visitors from all over, not the least of which is the stunning beauty that surrounds it.  But Cornish is also home to no less than four covered bridges, all registered with the National Register of Historic Places.  One of these bridges, the Cornish-Windsor Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River, is the longest two-span covered bridge in the world.  The Cornish-Windsor Bridge was built in 1866 and cost $9000 – a high price nearly 150 years ago. The town and its beauty draw artists from all over to paint not just the old bridges, but the amazing views of the surrounding countryside, lakes, mountains and streams as well.

Cornish has no large chain stores or shopping malls, but is located close to towns which do, such as Claremont, to the south, and White River Junction, Vermont, to the north.  A scenic trip to the White Mountain National Forest is about forty-five minutes northeast, while the NH seacoast lies about ninety minutes away.  Historic Concord, NH, can be reached inside of an hour and the state’s largest city, Manchester, lies only ten minutes beyond that.

Cornish is a member of SAU #6 along with Claremont and Unity, NH.  The Cornish Elementary School educates resident children from kindergarten through grade five, while students of middle school age attend the Claremont Middle School.  High school students from Cornish are taught at Stevens High School, also in Claremont.

Cornish is a wonderful town in which to raise a family and homes are often on the market there.  But it’s important to have someone in your corner, looking out for your best interests when searching for the home of your dreams.  You need someone who knows the NH real estate market, the communities within this wonderful state and the homes for sale throughout.  That person is Jim Miller of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.  Give Jim a call at (603) 801-3987 and see for yourself why he’s one of the top real estate brokers in the Granite State.
